A gravel grid installation is straightforward groundwork. There are no fixings, no adhesive and no specialist tools. What separates a surface that lasts twenty five years from one that fails in two winters is almost entirely what happens below the grid and how deep the stone sits above it.

This guide covers a standard domestic driveway build-up. For heavier duty use, increase the sub-base depth and check the guidance in the relevant application page.

Work out your total dig depth
Add together your sub-base depth, the grid depth and your blinding layer. For a typical car driveway with a 30mm grid that is 80mm of sub-base plus 30mm of grid plus a 10mm blinding, so you dig to 120mm. Measure from the finished level you want, which is usually flush with any adjacent path or threshold.
Excavate and check the formation
Dig out to your total depth and remove all topsoil, roots and soft spots. The formation you are left with should be firm underfoot. If it rings hollow or you can push a bar into it easily, dig deeper and make up the difference with additional sub-base.
Lay a woven geotextile
Roll the membrane across the whole formation, lapping any joins by at least 300mm and turning it up at the edges. This is the single most skipped step and the single most common cause of failure. Without it the sub-base gradually works down into the subsoil and the surface sinks.
Lay and compact the sub-base
Tip and rake MOT Type 1 in layers of no more than 75mm and compact each layer with a vibrating plate before adding the next. Compacting 150mm in one pass does not work: the bottom half never consolidates. Aim for an even, firm surface with no soft patches.
Blind and screed level
Spread a thin layer of grit sand over the compacted sub-base and screed it flat. This is what gives you a level finished surface. Time spent here is repaid directly in how the finished driveway looks.
Lay the grids
Start from a straight edge and push-fit the grids together, working across the area. The interlocking clips are moulded into all four sides, so they only go together one way. Check you are running square every few rows rather than at the end.
Cut to fit
Cut around edges, manholes and curves with a jigsaw or a fine-tooth handsaw. Cut through the cell walls rather than trying to snap the panel. Offcuts can usually be reused elsewhere on the job.
Fill the cells
Tip angular 10-20mm gravel across the grids and work it in with a stiff brush or the back of a rake until every cell is full and level with the cell walls. Do not leave hollow cells: they are where movement starts.
Blind the surface
Add a final 5-10mm of the same stone across the top so the cell walls are just covered. This is the maximum. Deeper than 10mm and you have a layer of unconfined stone sitting on top of your grid, which will migrate exactly as loose gravel always does.

Do I need edging?

Not structurally, the grids interlock and hold each other. An edge restraint gives a crisper line and stops surrounding soil creeping in, so most installers use one on soft edges and nothing against a hard edge.

Can I lay it over an existing gravel drive?

Usually yes. Rake the existing stone out level, compact it, and check your finished levels still work against thresholds and drains. If the existing surface is broken tarmac or concrete, it has to come up or you will have no drainage path.

What if my ground is clay?

Clay needs more attention, not different technique. Use the geotextile without exception, increase the sub-base depth, and be realistic about drainage: if water has nowhere to go, no surface will fix that on its own.

How long does it take?

A two-car driveway of around 40m² is a comfortable weekend for two people once the excavation and muck-away are done. The grid laying itself is the fastest part of the job.

Can I drive on it straight away?

Yes. Unlike a bound surface there is no curing time. Drive on gently for the first few days while the stone settles into the cells, and top up any cells that drop.
